1957 VIN: C5719256The 1957
Only 1,167 Imperial convertibles were built in 1957, the first year that all Chrysler divisions adopted longer and wider bodies with pronounced fins and much bolder styling than had been seen in many years. Powered by the 392/325 HP Hemi V-8 engine with a TorqueFlite automatic transmission, drivers will love the pushbutton controls on the dash. Slide behind the wheel and the instrument cluster looks like something out of space command with its two massive dials greeting you, ready to provide pertinent information. Equipped with power steering and power brakes, this example also has air conditioning. Presented in white with a green top and interior, the Imperial rides on wire wheels with wide whitewall tires, blending the scene of glamorous luxury cruiser and sophisticated futurist.

1958 VIN: LY15334The 1958
A recession hit hard in 1958, causing a number of automakers to sustain losses, and Imperial was no stranger to them. Only 675 Imperial convertibles were built that year, but what’s bad for sales is good for collectors later down the line, as the fewer built translates to ultimate rarity. Presented in bright red with a matching interior and a white top, few changes were bestowed upon the 1958 Imperial, the most obvious being the revised grille design. Still powered by a 392 CI Hemi V-8, horsepower was increased to 345. The TorqueFlite automatic transmission is still controlled by the cool pushbutton system, and this car is equipped with power steering, power brakes and air conditioning.

1959 VIN: M637105873The 1959
For 1959, Imperial received a heavily revised front end and a majorly restyled interior complete with power-operated swivel seats, a new dashboard, front center armrest and a new steering wheel, among other refreshments. The 392 CI Hemi V-8 was retired, replaced by the new 413 Wedge Head V-8, bringing a slight bump in power to 350 HP. The pushbutton-controlled TorqueFlite automatic transmission remained, however. This example is presented in light blue with a white interior and top, and it is equipped with air conditioning, power steering and power brakes, as well as wire wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires.

1960 VIN: 9204111678The 1960
Imperial brought about a number of changes for 1960, ushering in what many argue was the penultimate expression of Imperial. The entire interior and most of the body was restyled and given bolder appointments, and the frown of the headlights was more pronounced, along with the front bumper that appeared to be smiling with a slightly ominous grin. Imperial produced only 618 convertibles that year, and this one was once owned by Hollywood actor Jack Palance. Featuring the 413/350 HP Wedge Head V-8 engine and pushbutton-controlled TorqueFlite automatic transmission, it also rewards drivers with power steering, power brakes and air conditioning among other amenities. Painted bright red with a white top and interior, the wire wheels and wide whitewall tires blend flawlessly with this ultra-luxurious Imperial.

1961 VIN: 9214109309The 1961
For 1961, Imperial raised the bar on design and comfort once again, boldly bringing back the days when headlights were separated elements attached to the bodies of cars, not integrated within the fenders or grilles. The quad floating headlights created a unique design that would become an Imperial hallmark by which the brand would always be remembered. The 413/350 HP Wedge Head V-8 and pushbutton-controlled TorqueFlite automatic transmission returned again, the combination proving highly reliable, robust and spirited. This particular Imperial is presented in the very rare color of Dubonnet Metallic with a white top and interior and features power front swivel seats, power steering and power brakes. This would be the last year Chrysler products would feature the tailfins, subsequently ending an era.
- One of 429 produced
- Very rare color combination
- 413/350 HP V-8 engine
- Pushbutton TorqueFlite transmission
- Power swivel seats

Re: Mecum Kissimmee 2020 : Forward Look !
