1964 Miller & Meteor Hearse that carried Kennedy JFK
VIN Number: 64Z000050

Cadillac's Series 75 Fleetwood commercial chassis, denoted by the letter "Z" in the Cadillac ID number, was the chassis of choice for America's commercial car manufacturers.

Powered by Cadillac's powerful 429 cubic inch, 340 hp overhead valve V-8, and driving through the proven, smooth, reliable, four-speed HydraMatic transmission, the Cadillac Series 75 combined the elegance expected of an ambulance or funeral car with the strength and adaptability of Cadillac's drivetrain and chassis. Built on a 156" wheelbase, some 13" longer than the factory-bodied Fleetwood sedans and limousines, the Series 75 commercial chassis gave professional car manufacturers the size, strength, and adaptability they required in practicing their increasingly specialized art.

One of the foremost professional car builders was Miller-Meteor in Piqua, Ohio. Established as the Meteor Motor Car Company in 1912 by Maurice Wolfe, production of Meteor automobiles began in 1914 but quickly concentrated on professional cars, primarily hearses, built on the Miller chassis as the Miller-Meteor. The two companies remained separate but intimately connected and survived the Depression by relying on their professional car market and continuing to build high quality, reliable vehicles. In the mid-50's, Miller and Meteor were purchased in separate transactions by Divco-Wayne, builder of the Divco delivery trucks and Wayne bus bodies.

Miller-Meteor expanded, and by the early 1960's was the largest builder of professional cars on Cadillac chassis - which made Miller-Meteor the dominant manufacturer of these custom-built vehicles in America. At one time in the early 1970's, Miller-Meteor offered 34 different professional car models. While the market was, at least by Detroit terms, small, the traditions of custom coachwork, hand finishing, and craftsmanship survived at Miller-Meteor. The craftsmen, who built, trimmed, and finished these individual vehicles respected the solemn moments and lasting memories which were accented by their workmanship, and they lavished care and concern upon their products.

O'Neal's 1964 Cadillac was known as a limousine-style combination: "limousine-style" for it's full complement of side windows in the rear compartment, and "combination" for the floor which flipped over to convert the coach from a hearse to an ambulance. Of significance is the fact that this hearse would carry Body No. 1 for Miller-Meteor for the 1964 model year.

Miller- Meteor "Body No. 1" was built for show at the National Funeral Home Directors Association Convention taking place in Dallas in October 1963. O'Neal took delivery of this hearse following the show. On the afternoon of November 22, 1963, when President Kennedy's body was placed aboard it and Jacqueline Kennedy stepped inside to accompany her late husband to Air Force One, O'Neal Funeral Home's Cadillac began one of the most epic motorcar journeys in history, and the elaborate drama which absorbed the country, and the world, for the next four days culminating in the state funeral on Monday, November 25. The Cadillac remained in service with O'Neal for the next several years until it was sold to the Thomae Funeral Home in San Bonita, Texas, in about 1970. About five years later, Thomae traded it to Summers Funeral Cars in Duncanville, Texas, and it was acquired by it's present owner, who also was in the funeral business in Texas in the early 1980's. It has been in his care ever since. At the time of writing, the odometer showed 48,803 original miles. The Miller-Meteor Cadillac limousine style combination is all original except for a repaint in the original Aspen White and still has it's original green and white interior, as well as all the equipment and fixtures which were part and parcel of it?s professional car utilization, including rear compartment air conditioning.
