Salut

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cranks 1964 - 1990 de Oldsmobile

Identification
There are about seven types of cranks:

Early series big block, short stroke, all forged. 400, 425's. They have an "L" or "check mark" shaped notch on the drive flange. One leg much longer than the other, one corner, one leg nearly 90' to the OD, other approaches at a gentle angle. Cast will have a thin part line, forged a very wide [1/4 to 1"] line with obvious grind marks where the flash was trimmed.

Early series small block. Forged. 330's. Notch on back drive flange is "L" or "check mark" shaped like other forged cranks. One leg much longer than the other, one corner, one leg nearly 90' to the OD, other approaches at a gentle angle. Again, cast will have a thin part line, forged a very wide [1/4 to 1"] line with obvious grind marks where the flash was trimmed. This could also be the nodular (not forged) 350 crank (see next item).

Nodular 350 crank. Notch on back drive flange is "L" or "check mark" shaped like other forged cranks. One leg much longer than the other, one corner, one leg nearly 90' to the OD, other approaches at a gentle angle. Check the casting parting line: wide means forged, narrow means cast. While not forged, this is a very good cast crank.

Late series small block. Maybe nodular, most cast, non forged. 260, 307, 350, and 403's. Notch on back drive flange is a tall "C" or flat "U" shape. Later [sb] cranks, which are even lamer, use an even deeper C-notch, almost as deep as it is wide. Some have the "L" or "check mark" shaped notch, but they are not forged. Check the casting parting line: wide means forged, narrow means cast.

Late [1968 and up] big blocks: 400, and 455's. Forged. Mystery crank - reputed to have been used in '68 Toronado, but found in a 1968 low comp. 2bbl fullsize motor. ID number 400943. Notch on back drive flange is "L" or "check mark" shaped, like other forged cranks, but is really like a "J". The notch is just like the "L" notch except for the corner will be nicely rounded where one leg meets the other. Check the casting parting line: wide means forged, narrow means cast.

Late bb's, 400, and 455's, cast, Nodular iron. Casting #397363 +/- the last digit. Has a big ol' N (or smaller CN) cast onto the side of the front weight. Best 455 crank you can get, unless you count the elusive 'forged' unit mentioned above. Apparently, they came in a lot of 1968 to 1969 400's, and 1968 to 1970 455's. Maybe later engines, too. External ID: back drive flange notch is a tall "C" or wide "U" shape, like every other cast crank, big or little block. 'Course, from the outside, it looks just like...

Late bb's, 455's, cast, plain iron. Same casting #397363, +/-. It has NO 'N' on the front weight, yet has the same casting #, go figure. Same tall "C" or wide "U" shaped notch cast into the back drive flange. Weaker than the Nodular crank, or so they say.

Abbreviations and Code information
"FS" = Forged Steel
"AS" = ARMASTEEL = PMI
"PMI" = Pearlitic Malleable cast iron. ARMASTEEL logo may not be present on all cranks.
ARMASTEEL is not steel, but a form of cast iron. ARMASTEEL was a registered trademark (#0393916) GM used starting October of 1937. The trademark was last renewed in 1982 and expired in 2002.
"N" = Nodular Cast Iron. "N" mark may not be present on all cranks. "CFD" = Central Foundry Division. May not be present on all cranks.
It appears many cranks do not have a casting date.
The normal GM format: A=January, B=February etc. Second digit or digits is date, last digit is year. D124 = April 12, 1964 or 1974.
Some cranks may have a 3 digit number like 205. It may be a Julian production date, but there is no confirmation of that.

Salut Copoz..

Salut Full
le SD455 1973 a un crank nodular

Super Duty engines were coded ZJ and W8 for manuals and XD and Y8 for automatics. Starting at the bottom of the engine let's talk about the block. The engine block used to build the SD was significantly reinforced with additional webbing in the main bearing and lifter bore areas for strength. The main bearing caps were of mallable iron instead of ductile iron as on other engines for increased strength, and utilized the preferred four bolt arrangement. Resting in the mains was a nodular cast iron crankshaft which was rolled and filleted for better oiling and less friction. A forged crank was preferred by all involved, until they realized this single piece would nearly double the production costs. Since in production form the engine did not have high compression and caried a 5700 rpm redline, a tougher forged crank really wasn't needed. The block did have a reinforced boss at the cam drive so that a racing style dry sump oiling system could be fitted.

Introduced in 1961 as a dealer installed Super Duty option that had dual four barrels, the 421 in³ (6.9 L) was bored to 4.09 in (103.9 mm) and stroked to 4.00 in (101.6 mm), and also featured larger, 3.25 in (83 mm) main journals. Unlike previous enlargements of this engine, it did not replace the 389. The 421 SD became factory installed in 1962 and in 1963 a street version became available from the factory with a four barrel or tri-power carburation. The Super Duty versions of this engine were extensively used in NASCAR stock car racing and drag racing competition. The 421 also marked the end of the option for a forged steel crankshaft. The Armasteel cast crankshaft was the standard crankshaft of the entire Pontiac V-8 line until '67. While "Armasteel" was no more than a fancy name for a hardened cast iron unit, it did refer to the "locking ball" as opposed to the "flaking" type cast iron found in other engines. In '67, Pontiac out of concerns the public misunderstood the engineering terms, went to a Nodular cast iron name crankshaft, which they used until 1975.

Je pense que je commence a comprendre la diférence entre standard cast iron et nodular cast iron

Salut

Buick 455

Here is a 72 Buick 455, engine code WF. Notice the large "N" on the first counterweight of the crankshaft. All Buick 455 cranks are nodular iron. Some do not have the N because of plant manufacturing origin. I spoke to Dennis Manner (Senior Buick 455 Engineer) and he told me cranks with the N were cast in Flint. Later on, production was moved to a new foundry and the N disappeared.

Question Crankshaft Empty Re: Question Crankshaft

Message  Pierre LE DENTIER SBC Mar 05 Oct 2010, 18:55

Que je suis donc newfie
J'avais pourtant lu un bon texte ce matin sur le crank nodular

Steel isn't nodular.

Cast iron can be nodular.

Steel can be forged.

Nodular iron cannot be forged. It will tear open if you try to forge it.

The crank will be either forged steel OR cast nodular iron.

Representing it as "forged nodular steel" (that is also cast) is a contradiction and will turn away buyers.

Verbal evidence suggests that this is cast nodular iron (not forged and not steel), and the "steel" reference pertains to the matrix, which is steel - if it didn't have the graphite nodules. But that is true of other cast irons too. Gray cast iron is steel too - if it didn't have the graphite flakes. But put graphite nodules or graphite flakes in steel and you have cast iron. It isn't steel anymore.

Forged steel crankshafts are generally thought to be stronger and are more expensive to make. Cast nodular iron crankshafts can be made commercially in small quantities because the tooling setup costs are not significant. Often, the decrease in strength of cast nodular vs. the forged steel crankshafts are also not significant - depending on the application. The graphite nodules also assist in bearing break-in.
