Telephone negotiations with Koresh, Ricks said, often strayed from biblical avenues. Koresh's favorite topic was his 1968 Camaro.

"He often talks about his black Camaro, which is very close to his heart," Ricks said. "Apparently, it has a 427 cubic-inch engine, and Holley carbs."

That was April 13. By the afternoon of April 19, Koresh and most of his followers were dead, when, as President Clinton noted, "They decided to immolate them-selves."

When the smoke cleared, the central tangible legacy left by David Koresh was his black Camaro.

The Koresh Camaro now sits at the home of a Waco-area salvage operator. It has been vandalized and partially stripped - reportedly that happened while the car was still at the compound, after the fire, when only law enforcement officers had access to it - but it remains largely intact.

The fate of the Camaro, as well as about 50 other vehicles left at the compound - cars, trucks, vans, bass boats, motorcycles, buses, many damaged beyond repair by the tanks that patrolled the compound - is un-de-cided.

"We're still trying to get permission to sell some of them," said Gary Coker, an attorney who represents several Branch Davidians and successfully represented Koresh in a 1988 attempted-murder trial.

There is not much left of the Koresh legacy, and certainly little that is worth any money, except his black 1968 Camaro, vehicle identification number 124378L302009.

Even establishing positive ownership is difficult; there is no current registration record for the car, and the license plates were among those items stolen. Other parts of the car missing include the steering wheel, gearshift knob, the cap from the power steering pump, the knobs from the Kenwood stereo and the gas cap. Someone tried to carve the vehicle identification number off the dashboard and failed, instead slicing up the dash itself. The taillights were broken, the door was kicked in, the front bumper was bent.

Still, there is enough left to see why Koresh loved the car. The monster rectangular-port, 427-cubic-inch engine remains, as does a four-speed transmission and a pristine interior, including leather pump-up bucket seats. The value of the car may be reduced slightly because Camaros were not available from the factory with 427 engines until 1969, so collectors who insist on authenticity may be offended.

But this isn't just any 1968 Camaro. Its value as a sideshow oddity - on par, perhaps, with the Bonnie and Clyde death car or President Kennedy's limousine 30 years ago in Dallas - could hike the price to about $75,000, perhaps eight times what it would cost had it not been Koresh's car and been immortalized in FBI briefings.

Prince Rainier III of Monaco spent years amassing a collection of classic, rare and collectible automobiles. It was an eclectic assortment of makes, models and eras. A 1939 Simca 5 shared the same display area as a 1980 Citroën CX2400 and a 1928 Hispano Suiza.


But his son, Prince Albert II, wants to take the collection in a different direction. We don't know for sure, but perhaps he wants a more focused group of autos. So Prince Albert II is putting 38 of the cars up for auction.


A few of the more interesting lots are the aforementioned 1939 Simca 5 expected to go for between 8,000 and 10,000€ (about $12,500) and a rare 1973 Camaro export model with 43k kilometers on the odo. It's described as being in very good shape, but its inline six keeps the expected sale price to between 8,000 and 12,000€ ($15,000).


On the high end is a 1924 Panhard & Levassor X47 limo with a Weymann body. Weymann, the auction catalog reads, was known for making lightweight, aviation-inspired bodies by stretching imitation leather across wooden frames. This car's rarity and superb condition could push the top bid to and estimated 35,000€ ($44,000).

Among the vehicles being offered is a 1973 Camaro with just 27,185 miles on it. But it’s not the low mileage that makes this car special, it’s the fact that it is a rare export model delivered new to Belgium and designated by the car’s General Motors Continental Antwerpen plaque.

Powered by a 250ci inline-six backed by an automatic transmission, the car only makes about 140hp, but is said to be in excellent original condition. According to the Artcurial auction information for the car, the exterior paint is still nearly flawless and the interior doesn’t show any wear. Although it’s a rare export model, the car is believed to bring in no more than $15,000.
